Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma

The first cooking anime I have seen, and it sure is entertaining. Food Wars follows the story of Yukihira Soma, a middle school student who is determined to surpass his father's culinary skills. After saving the family restaurant from being knocked down and turned into a block of flats, Yukihira's father informs him of his decision to close the restaurant while he travels to Europe to hone his culinary skills. Not only that, he enrolls Yukihira into an elite culinary school, which only has a graduation rate of 10% (talk about no pressure).

As the anime progresses, you'll meet different characters, both friend and foe, with interesting backstories about how they came to the school and what they're ultimately striving for, which means not everything is focused on Yukihira which is a good thing as it brings something different to the episodes.
You'll also see the obstacles which chefs may have to overcome in order to be the best they can be, and how essential it is for a chef to think on his/her feet in certain situations. Another thing is the Shokugeki, a battle between two chefs who must put something of equal value on the line. This is a really entertaining part of the anime, but you must wait for the next episode before you see how the battle concludes.

For something which could have been serious, Food Wars successfully brings humour and light-heartedness into the anime. The reactions to food tasting can be a bit over the top (think steam covering otherwise nude bodies) but nevertheless the food looks good to eat! Luckily some viewers of the anime have said that some recipes are featured in the manga, so we can all try some of that delicious food, minus the reactions (hopefully!).
