Log Horizon

Log Horizon is based on the story of Shiroe, a veteran gamer, who is one of the 30,000 players trapped in another world which looks just like the world in the online game Elder Tale. The players are still alive, but must continue to fight the monsters.

The anime gets right into the story as you watch a party fight off monsters, with the leader (Shiroe) directing each member during the fight before being attacked. He becomes unconscious and when he comes to, he finds himself somewhere else which we learn is Akihabara (or Akiba) in the world of Elder Tale. Other players find themselves there too, not knowing why they are there. Their status screens appear, but Shiroe learns that they cannot log out.
It turns out that what you see in the first episode is just a flashback, getting you to grips with what happened before Shiroe & co were in that fight before the story progresses.

As the anime progresses, you're being told more about the game by Shiroe, by explaining different classes and sub-classes, and the abilities being used by his party. If you have played MMORPGs before, you would know of the different classes and abilities and how essential teamwork is in order to defeat bosses and progress. By using the gameplay element, Log Horizon progresses by showing you how diverse this genre of gaming is whilst continuing with the story. Not that it is a bad thing, as you come to see just how good a (well-known) gamer Shiroe is this way and why people respect him.

Log Horizon has a good start by getting straight into the story and explaining to those familiar and new to games what to expect in an MMORPG, and continues to be enjoyable by adding humour and action to the story.
