Avatar: The Legend of Korra (Book 1)

This is one of the strongest sequels to a very strong anime in my opinion. Avatar: The Legend of Korra follows the new Avatar Korra, who is a Waterbender. She has already learned how to Firebend and Earthbend (probably on her own), and now needs to learn how to Airbend. But it doesn't just focus all on her, for there is a returning character from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and who better than the Aang's wife turned widow Katara? She is now older and helps Korra with her bending training. Korra isn't as calm a character as Aang was, which can get her into trouble at times. Her feisty nature contributes to it too, and results in her running away to Republic City to learn Airbending from Aang's youngest son Tenzin. Whilst getting used to the hustle and bustle of a city, Korra meets Lin Beifong, police chief and daughter of beloved Toph Beifong. It's so good to have these links to old characters!

As time has progressed with the introduction of a new Avatar, clearly there will be changes to the world that the characters dwell in. Bending is now seen as a sport, with benders and non-benders enjoying it, and we're introduced to pro-bending brothers Mako (a Firebender) and Bolin (an Earthbender).

With this new city comes its own problems, and with the coexistence of benders and non-benders, you can bet on individuals wanting to show who is the superior being - enter plot and new villain to Korra's story. Isn't that what the Avatar series is all about? Anyway, the villain in Book 1 is Amon, a masked person who is the leader of the anti-bending revolution known as the Equalists. Finding out that the Avatar is now in Republic City, he enlists her against the revolution and vows to take away her bending. With the help of Mako and Bolin and others, Korra finds a way to defeat Amon whilst learning how to Airbend.

With a new Avatar and new world, you can expect there to be changes in views of the Avatar and characters, whether friends of old and new, or enemies. Like I said, it is a very strong start to The Last Airbender, and from how Book 1 ends, it's bound to get better. Highly recommended to all Avatar fans!
