Rain

Rain is a manga based off a light novel with the same name. It's set in the continent of Murgenia where magic and swordsmanship are mastered. The story focuses on Sunkwoll, a small country under attack from the great country Zarmine. Enter Rain, the main character, who looks like an older version of Kirito in my opinion, and is the type of guy who is against war and will not participate in battles, despite being general of the Sunkwoll army and an exceptionally gifted swordsman. Which raises the question: how is one supposed to wage war like this?

Rain's decision to withdraw from the battle results in the King placing him on house arrest, which he is happy about. His close friend and fellow general Ralphus asks if the battle will be won, to which Rain says no. The King, despite being warned by Rain about this, marches into battle anyway, and at one point ends up leaving part of his army (including Ralphus) in order to continue to march into battle in the middle of the night. This turns out to be a bad decision due to the King being betrayed and killed by his men who were bought out by the enemy. As a result, Rain ends up marching into battle to help Ralphus, which is a success. But the King of Leygus makes his appearance in the hope of fighting Rain after learning he is a Dragon Slayer - a person who, upon defeating a dragon, gains their power and abilities.

This part of the story does not attempt to drag out and makes way for a new part, in which Rain shows off his skills in battle and whilst Sunkwoll is undergoing some changes as he also becomes personal guard to the King's daughter, Princess Selva, who is now ruling Sunkwoll. She also has some backstory with Rain, clearly hinting at the romance part of the manga. What's more, Rain isn't your same old general you get in anime and manga - he's a very laid back, smart and strong person who likes to call himself a genius whenever he can (reminds me of Adlet from Rokka - Braves of the Six Flowers-). On the battlefield he's not one to underestimate in terms of skill and strength, having had reasons to become stronger when he was younger, which also earned him the title of Dragon Slayer (and many others) over time.

The manga is more story than action in terms of balance, but it's the story that shows you more of Rain: his strategies, his personality, and his influence on those around him. You could say that the action parts are the fruits of his labour, which reveals more about Rain at the same time as showing how skilled he is. Nevertheless, the action is worth the wait. The story is interesting, with more comedy than expected, but considering the type of person Rain is, it makes its place in the story and is welcoming.

Rain is not a manga you just come across, and even if you do, you may judge it due to the main character reminding you of Kirito. But his personality contrasts that of Kirito's, and with that comes a great story and action.

Summary

An exceptionally gifted swordsman and general of an army refuses to join in the battle against a larger country in the continent of Murgenia
Anything else?: He's a very laid back character for someone who's a general

  1. This manga / LN looks interesting. How many chapters / volumes have been released Zoya?. Looking at the pic of Rain. I don't think he looks like kirito imo. They certainly have similar attire, weapon and clothing choice.

    1. This is an interesting manga. Has a nice medieval element to it. On the site I read it on there are 53 chapters released (10 volumes I think). Yeah those things you pointed out are the reasons why I mentioned he reminds me of Kirito ^-^
