Which Anime/Manga?: SAO v LH

The first in the feature Which Anime/Manga? will compare the Sword Art Online and Log Horizon anime. As the key thing to look for is a strong similarity in the plot, this includes going through the differences and similarities of the story. Feel free to leave comments with your thoughts on the comparison, and subscribe to the blog to get the latest updates on this feature and future posts!

As expected, this will contain spoilers for story but will be done as vaguely as possible.

What's the plot?
Players in their respected MMORPG are trapped in the game, with no way of logging out. In SAO the players are told by the game's creator, whereas in LH, the main character and another character have a chat about it and venture out to find out more whilst other players are still confused of the sudden teleporting to Akihabara.

What's similar?
The main character knows that they cannot log out, and work their way through the game, befriending other players along the way and dealing with different situations which arise, showing how experienced they are in playing their respected game.
Neither main character likes the guild lifestyle, but do fight in parties.

What's different?
In SAO the players are trapped in the actual game. The main character (Kirito) is told, along with other players, of the game trapping by the game's creator, who also tells them that should a player's hp deplete to 0 they will die, both in-game and in reality. This allows story progression and focus on the main character as Kirito tries to complete the game and survive at the same time, and allows the anime to focus on some minor characters for character development and plot. Since Kirito prefers to fight solo, he becomes notorious as a solo player by others.

In LH the players are transported to another world that looks just like the game Elder Tale, only it is somewhat different. The main character (Shiroe) becomes aware of this as the story progresses and finds out about not being able to log out whilst talking with an old friend. This allows story progression and much more focus on Shiroe and his party, with the addition of Shiroe explaining different aspects of the game. Although he does not prefer the guild lifestyle, Shiroe does form a guild with his party later on.

Conclusion
Both shows have interesting stories and are full of action, but SAO opts for a more steady story progression whilst LH takes you straight into the action and focuses on gameplay explanations as a result, which those familiar and/or new to MMORPGs may prefer since SAO doesn't explain it's gameplay in much detail (if not at all). LH also shows how essential and powerful a party can be when everyone works together, which SAO does show as well but not in as much detail.

If you prefer a steady story progression and action > SAO
If you prefer a quicker story progression and action > LH
